BULK LIQUID TRANSPORTATION

Methods of Transporting Liquids

There are 5 main methods of transporting liquid in bulk and analysis of all applicable methods must be made in order to ascertain the cost effectivness and benefits of using U-D SHIPPING flexitanks

1. Flexitank :

2. Parcel Tanker :

Advantages : Low cost of freight on sea leg.

Disadvantages : Quantities must be upwards of 2000 tonnes per shipment. Specialised port installations
required both at dispatching and receiving port. Numerous pumping operations, and consequent costs of surveys
Not suitable for products susceptible to contamination.

3. Ships Deep tanks in Break Bulk Cargo vessels

Advantages : Low cost of freight on sea leg.

Disadvantages : Lack of availability due to containerisation. Quantities of 100/500 tonnes per shipment.
Specialised port installations required both at dispatching and receiving port. Numerous pumping operations, and consequentcosts of surveys not suitable for products susceptible to contamination.

4. ISO Tank Containers

Advantages : Can carry hazardous cargoes

Disadvantages : High capital costs and therefore high leasing and operating costs Tare weight 50 percent above 20-
foot GP containers potentially resulting in reduced payload. High empty retum costs.

5. 210 Litre/55 Gallon Steel Drums or other plastic containers

Advantages : Readily Available Low risk of contamination Can be used for storage at receiver’s plant.

Disadvantages : Cost of drums. They will probably be discarded or sold on at much reduced cost. Self-Weight of drums reduces payload. High drumming cost and high cost of labour in filling, loading and unloading Drums in to containers.
